On Thursday the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) gave Amazon approval to experiment with drones. Amazon has previously stated they intend to use the drones to deliver packages to customer’s doorsteps.
Amazon has been working on the program since 2013 and they filed a formal petition to the FAA that said the robots will be able to deliver goods to customer’s in 30 minutes or less. They also added one day drones will be as normal as seeing mail trucks on the road.
The FAA has since issued Amazon an experimental pass to use for development and training.
Businesses currently are essentially prohibited from using drones but the FAA released preliminary regulations this year that would begin to allow the machines to be used. The preliminary regulations would allow commercial drones that weigh less than 55 pounds to be used. They would also not be allowed to operate at more than 500 feet and they could not exceed 100 mph.
