GOP Members of Congress Aim to Block Earmarks

By Javier Manjarres

Conservative Republican Members of Congress sent a letter Speaker John Boehner and Minority Leader Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi urging them to “resist efforts of some Members of the House to restore earmarks in the 113th Congress.”

The letter was spearheaded by freshman Congresswoman Sandy Adams, who is currently in a contentious primary race against long-time Republican Congressman John Mica. Mica, for whatever reason, did not sign the letter.

Aside from not signing the letter sent to House leadership, Congressman Mica and his campaign are alledged to have reverted to voter intimidation in order to try to gain traction against Adams. According to grassroots activists in the Orlando area, Mica’s campaign has threatening to “ruin” careers of prominent supports of Adams in hopes of dissuading them from voting for for the congresswoman in the Republican primary election.

These same activists see this as an act of desperation on the party of Mica, due to the fact that Adams seems to be running away with the support of the conservative base of the Republican Party in Florida.

Here’s Adams’ press release regarding the letter to House leadership-

“The American people sent an historic class of new representatives to Congress in 2010 with a mandate to change the way Washington, D.C. works and to fix what is wrong with the federal government,” said Adams.  “As a proud member of that freshman class, I know we cannot begin to address our nation’s debt and deficit problems until we get a handle on the runaway spending and special interest earmarks that incentivize members to vote for bad policy.  With a $15.7 trillion debt, Congress owes it to American taxpayers to be responsible stewards of their hard-earned money.  This letter serves as a message to the leaders of the Republican and Democratic caucuses that the earmark ban should continue next Congress.”

Blocking earmarks…or better yet getting them under control…what a novel idea…certainly not adhered to by either party…especially during the 8 Bush years…plus unpaid war costs to boot! It’s like the proverbial pot calling the kettle black. What a load of crap!

Although I like what she is saying/doing, talk before elections is cheap– whether her resolve holds up under the test of time remains to be seen-

    – disclaimer– Mica was my rep before the map was changed, however I
would not have voted for him this go around.
