In perhaps one of the most naked acts of pandering ever displayed in the context of presidential campaign politics, President Barack Obama has officially ended his “evolution” on the issue of gay marriage and stated his support his support for gay marriage to Robin Roberts of ABC News earlier today-
“I have to tell you that over the course of several years as I have talked to friends and family and neighbors when I think about members of my own staff who are in incredibly committed monogamous relationships, same-sex relationships, who are raising kids together, when I think about those soldiers or airmen or marines or sailors who are out there fighting on my behalf and yet feel constrained, even now that Don’t Ask Don’t Tell is gone, because they are not able to commit themselves in a marriage, at a certain point I’ve just concluded that for me personally it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same sex couples should be able to get married.” – President Barack Obama
Do you think the 2nd Amendment will be destroyed by the Biden Administration?(2)
If you think that Obama’s “evolution” on the issue of gay marriage is anything but politically contrived, you probably aren’t aware of the fact that Obama has previously supported same-sex marriage, and even the left-wing publication Nation isn’t buying his conversion-
Obama unambiguously supported same-sex marriage in 1996. In response to a survey from Outlines, a gay community newspaper in Chicago, Obama took the unusual step of typing in his response: “I favor legalizing same-sex marriage, and would fight efforts to prohibit such marriages.” At the time, his was a position on the progressive edge of the Democratic Party.
In other words, he was for it before he was against it, but now he’s for it again.
Regardless of where you stand on the issue, you have to be willfully naive not to see Obama’s “change of heart” as anything other than a pure political calculation that is meant to distract from his failed record on the economy, jobs, national security, governmental corruption, etc. Much like the phony “war on women”, the calculation by Obama is that the ensuing rhetoric from conservatives and Republicans will not be disciplined and come across as mean-spirited and bigoted in the eyes of undecided voters. However, it’s also a risk for Obama, as he risks alienating many socially conservative-minded blacks and Latinos who have historically been opposed to gay marriage.
